So this is big news - Wonder Woman 1984 is officially coming to both streaming AND theaters this December.
Why is this a big deal? Because it's the first time a major movie studio has taken a big budget blockbuster movie and decided to release it on a streaming as it premieres in theaters.
Right now, Wonder Woman 1984 is set to debut in theaters on Christmas Day, Dec. 25th. But it will ALSO be premiering on HBOMax for FREE for one month on the same day.
This is interesting because it completely undercuts the theatrical box office for the film. It would seem Warner Brothers is hoping this move will drive subscriptions to its streaming service to justify the expense of the movie. But it also signals the studio has no confidence in the viability of a theatrical release under current COVID restrictions.
Disney added a $30 premium price to it's exclusive release of Mulan, but it would seem HBOMax is pushing WW1984 out as part of the HBOMax subscription (albeit only for 1 month).
What do you guys think? Will you see WW1984 in the theater? Or will you prefer to stay at home and watch it on HBOMax?
